UKRAINIAN (OLD MONARCHIC RUSSIA) THEORETICIAN AND BOHEMIAN REVOLUTIONARY IN THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY VICTORIAN OCCULTIST AND THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT, HELENA P. BLAVARTSKY, FIGHTS WITH TROOPS ALONGSIDE RISORGIMENTO ITALIAN PATRIOT, WITH COMRADES ACROSS THE WORLD, IMMIGRATED TO THE REPUBLIC OF THE UNITED STATES.
How did H.P.B. think of the Theos. Society within the geopolitical and socio-political climate of her time?
The private world and confederates of H.P.B. were nearly all played important roles in that regard.
She certainly provided commentary about the climate in her writings. As Manly P. Hall instructs in ‘Philosophical Reflections on the Use and Abuse of Money,’ the study of the History of the World, and the origin of the Mysteries, is more than studying metaphysics and mythological hermeneutics. It is also an underlying war, and power struggle.
The THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT didn’t just focus on mysticism and theoretical studies of the THEOSOPHICAL SYSTEM.
The old liberal cause swept Europe into a frenzy, and into death and violent revolution. We do not find the adepts on a front line like warring bayonetted guerillas of Italy’s Risorgimento republican, Giuseppe Mazzini. However, we find them sharing much spirit with the philosophy of Mazzini and others. The adepts gave a high nod to the German-French, Baron d’Holbach of the Enlightenment period. Even saying of one of his books, that they thought they were reading from their School’s commentaries!
Helena Blavatsky defended the Tsarist dynasty, and thought the ideas of John Stuart Mill and the Russian Nihilists were dangers to Russia. Blavatsky’s colleagues, herself, and her superiors, whether those of Egypt, Syria, Russia, Persia, etc., were all involved in the political climate of the day. No one told her, she couldn’t discuss political and geopolitical issues.
H.P.B. immigrated, because she saw in the U.S. ideals, the hope, that is the theosophical ideal.
“Now a citizen of America, my adopted country, and the only land of true freedom in the whole world” (Helena Blavatsky, “REPUBLICAN CITIZEN”).
In another place, she calls herself a “democrat,” or what it originally meant, and not the modern party.
The culture of the world has shifted, as reactionary against “nationalisms” of the 19th-20th century.
So, have “theosophists” changed with the generation?
In the Letters of Helena P. Blavatsky, and articles, we find in her thought, that of the Slavophile philosophers. The Slavophiles were influenced by Friedrich Schelling, which had attracted many of the old aristocracy, of which H.P.B. was of; but H.P.B. did not care about her status. H.P.B. suggested spirit of nationalism, and liberty of India from colonial rule; but she also defended in her letters, the aristocrats, while also criticising them and nobles honestly, where they neglected the starving people. H.P.B. didn’t wish the end of the Romanov Dynasty. In her thought, no matter the system, the human condition would be the same, without moral regeneration and social change. All ideals don’t work in practice. Also, most ideals, are not fully realised, as it was conceived in the mind of the originator. Upon becoming a “plain citizen” of the United States of America, in that time of the 1870’s, she stated, her adoption of U.S. citizenry, forfeited her claim to any titles of nobility however. Helena P. Blavatsky, referred to herself as a “Republican Citizen.” Further, she described herself as a democrat, who would rather live among the peasants, says something of her character; but what that meant to the upper classes, was that one was in league with the revolutionaries of that time, and against the monarchy.
